China Deal (and Tariff Deadline) Are Close
President Trump told reporters Monday that China wants to find common ground in trade negotiations, but he was noncommittal about progress.
鈥淭he Chinese want to make a deal, we鈥檒l see what happens,鈥 he said. Meanwhile, the clock ticks toward Dec. 15, when 15 percent tariffs on consumer goods from China are scheduled to begin. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Fox Business Network that date a 鈥渓ogical deadline鈥 for a phase-one deal.
Also on Monday, Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to Trump, said a trade deal with China is possible by year鈥檚 end.
