While the overall number of tornadoes hasn鈥檛 shown long-term growth, large outbreaks鈥攎any tornadoes occurring rapidly over vast areas鈥攁re becoming more frequent. These events require extensive forecasting efforts, demanding skilled meteorologists and advanced radar coordination.

“In the past, we didn’t see the kind of large outbreak days that we do now,” says Melissa Widhalm of Purdue University鈥檚 Midwestern Regional Climate Center. “It used to be kind of unusual to see dozens of them in a day. And now we get that year after year.”

The National Weather Service has faced challenges in responding to major outbreaks due to staff shortages caused by budget cuts and a federal hiring freeze. During Kentucky鈥檚 recent deadly outbreak, forecasters from other offices had to be brought in to compensate for staffing gaps.

Scientists are still working to understand changing tornado patterns. Some research suggests climate change may shift tornado seasons, increasing storms in fall and winter as warm, moist air鈥攅ssential for tornado formation鈥攂ecomes more common. However, long-term impacts remain uncertain.

Understanding and preparing for these evolving tornado patterns is crucial, especially as forecasting becomes more complex. Despite challenges, meteorologists continue to provide essential warnings, helping communities stay safe during extreme weather events.

Blame El Ni帽o and La Ni帽a for the Extreme Weather Outbreaks /news/blame-el-nino-and-la-nina-for-the-extreme-weather-outbreaks/ Thu, 23 May 2024 20:07:09 +0000 /?p=28209 Since late April, the U.S. has been hit by numerous tornado outbreaks and planting delays due to extreme weather, a result of the rapid transition from El Ni帽o to La Ni帽a.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) predicts that El Ni帽o will transition to the neutral state of the El Ni帽o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) next month. According to NWS forecasters, there is a 49% chance that La Ni帽a will develop between June and August, and a 69% chance it will occur between July and September.

This transition is contributing to the recent surge in severe weather, including tornado outbreaks across the U.S.

鈥淲e saw approximately 380 tornadoes in the U.S. during the month of April. If you look at all the years back to 1950, all the April鈥檚, this will rank as the number two all-time. The only year we saw more U.S. tornadoes was the historic April 2011,鈥 says Brad Rippey, USDA Meteorologist.

Three main factors are driving this extreme weather pattern. First, there is a contrast between cold air from Canada and warm, humid air from the Gulf and Atlantic, creating a strong temperature gradient across the country. Second, the transition from El Ni帽o to La Ni帽a is causing atmospheric confusion, leading to unpredictable weather patterns. Finally, relentless rains since April 24th have caused flooding and delayed planting across the U.S.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of a pattern change in the weather forecast, with warmer temperatures and drier conditions expected in the coming weeks. However, the switch to La Ni帽a could worsen drought conditions in some areas, particularly in the Northwest and Southwest regions of the country.
